The money grab begins.

After purchasing my niece's ticket to Atlanta, I told her to ask her mom to pick her up from the hospital. Her flight didn’t leave until early morning and she needed to be in a safe space. She called her mother, and my sister said, “I just made my plate for dinner. You’ll have to wait!”

When she arrived, she had the close on her back and a small purse. Without hesitation I took her shopping to get clothes, shoes, and everything women needed day to day. I didn’t flood her with questions or advice; I gave her space and an opportunity to take it all in. She never talk about her pimp, and to my daughter she referred to him as her boyfriend. She largely spoke about her mother and siblings, and her disappointment of her childhood. Again, I just listened.

I didn’t feel qualified to engage in a clinical conversation with her relating to her life on the streets, so when the opportunity presented itself I provided resources for a therapist. I helped her order her birth certificate from vital records and to obtain a Georgia ID so that she could apply for work. Things were moving forward. She didn’t know how to drive, so when she finally found a job I had the expense of providing an Uber to and from work for her until she got her first check.

After a couple of months my daughter suggested they become roommates, since at the time my daughter had temporarily moved home to save money. I had mixed feelings about this, but I trusted my daughter to make quality decisions. They found a great apartment in the suburb of Atlanta, approximately fifteen minutes from my house. It appeared they had figured it all figured out. That was, until I received a text from my niece asking to borrow $688 to help her pay her portion of the first month’s rent. Which was odd since she had been working for several weeks by then and had collected at least two other three checks.

After speaking with my brother, I agreed to loan her the money under the condition she pay it all back. Largely since shortly after she asked for rent money, she asked for nearly $2,000 to get bedroom furniture because she didn’t have a bed. Of course, when it came time to make the first payment as agreed, not only did she not pay, she wasn’t answering my calls or texts.
